A note from Fr. Bob - June news

I have often heard, and have said myself, that in church, the summer is a “dead time”.  Attendance goes down, and most programs take a break.  It’s also said that there shouldn’t be any substantive committee or policy work done in the summer because people are away.

Well, we’ve already lost over a year of programs, committees, and substantive policy work.  I don’t want to wait any longer.  There’s too much to do.

Before I became rector, we had planned on having small groups of members get together to discuss the questions: “who are we as a church?”, “Who do we want to be?”, and “How do we get there?”.  In fact, the bishop included in my letter of agreement for becoming rector, that we complete this task by December 2020.  Because we felt that the in-person aspect of these meetings was important, we chose not to hold them while we could not meet.

I would like this process completed and analyzed by early fall so that the vestry can consider the suggestions to inform our 2022 budgeting process.  (I.e.: putting our money where our mouths are).

If you’re a member, or a regular attender, you’ll get an invitation to attend a gathering in someone’s home to help with this process.  Please come.  We need as much input as possible, and from as diverse a group as possible, to be able to set a direction for the future. (If you don’t get one by late June, let us know.  We must have you mis-coded in the computer.)

One of the realities of living in the Permian Basin is that people transfer in and transfer out depending on the energy industries.  This is one of those “transfer out” cycles for us.  We’ve lost a couple of families who have moved out of town for job and  educational opportunities.  This has left holes in our various ministries.

As we resume our “normal” service styles, we need to fill vacancies in our liturgical ministries.  We need ushers for both Sunday services.  We need readers for both services.  As long as we can administer the host at Communion, readers don’t have to administer the cup, so anyone of any age can read.  We need acolytes for the 10:30 service.  And we need audio-visual workers for both services.

Starting in July, I’m hoping we can restart breakfast between services and coffee hour after the 10:30 service.  We need someone to head this ministry and volunteers to set up, cook and clean up.  Wednesday dinners will start up with the new school year.  We’ll need a coordinator and volunteers for that.

We also need nursery workers.  These are paid positions, so if you or someone you know, are interested, let the office know.

As I said in my sermon on Pentecost, I believe we are on the verge of a Holy Spirt empowered surge in enthusiasm, opportunity, and ministry.  Get ready!  Holy Trinity is going to need people to flow with the holy wind that will sweep us into the  future.  Please pray and consider where you’ll best meet God’s call. Fr. Bob
