April News!

This year, the month of April begins with Maundy Thursday and the remembrance of Jesus’ command to love one another, to practice humble servanthood, and to offer radical forgiveness.  What a great way to live through the trauma of Christ’s betrayal, torture, and death: and even the joy and hopefulness of Christ’s resurrection.  Love, forgive and serve.

It would be naïve to think that just because the Church is living in the season of Easter that the world has moved on from Good Friday.  Sadness, despair, hatred, ignorance, death and apathy are all active in       society and in many aspects of our lives.  Racial, political, and economic divides among people have     widened and become more entrenched.  Families and friends have suffered separation and hurt because of the things that divide us.  Certainly not what we would expect in a post resurrection world.

We may not be able to bring the world into Easter, but we can take Easter to the little part of it we      inhabit.  Love one another, practice humble servanthood, and offer radical forgiveness.  Perhaps these three things can open the tomb of division and show the light of a resurrected life.

By “love,” I don’t mean “affection.”  No, in this sense, love is an active respect, concern and care without condition or exception.  Jesus never stopped loving Peter or even Judas in spite of their denial and        betrayal.

Jesus washed the feet of his disciples.  The Son of God, doing the work of a slave, is our model of humble servanthood.  We can put our egos, fear, and apathy aside and get our hands and hearts dirty to help each other.  We can be the hands of Christ to a world starving for a kind touch and a hand up.

Jesus forgave the man who drove the nails into his hands.  That act may be beyond our reach, but it is an example of the radical forgiveness to which we are called.  Perhaps we can start with forgiving the little insults and misdeeds that keep us from each other.  Maybe then, we can approach the more hurtful things that divide family and friends.

Love one another, practice humble servanthood, and offer radical forgiveness.  If we can live into this type of resurrection life, we may be able to draw at least some of the world out of the darkness of Good Friday and into the light of Easter. Bob+
