The Language of Love

September 30th is the Feast Day of St. Jerome. St. Jerome was the man who first translated the Bible from its original languages, Greek and Hebrew, into Latin. Back in those days, Latin was the language of the common man, so it was known as the "vulgar" tongue. As a result, St. Jerome’s translation of the Bible into Latin became known as the "Vulgate." St. Jerome’s work was important as it made the Bible accessible to more people than ever before.

Today, we don’t use Latin Bibles, but English ones. Every English Bible we use is a translation from the Greek and Hebrew. It is the product of a considerable amount of work on the part of translators.

What is important to remember is not just the work that was involved, but also the heart behind the work. It was love that that caused St. Jerome to translate the Bible into Latin, and it was love that motivated scholars to give us our English Bible. There were two kinds of love—a love of God’s Word, and a love for people. They wanted others to be able to hear God’s Word in a language they could understand.

It’s a well-known fact that if you want someone to know that you love them, you will try to speak their language. I’ve heard from many travelers that when we as Americans try to speak the language of whatever country we visit, the people there feel loved and respected. Speaking in a language that another person understands tells them that they matter to you, and that communicating with them is very important. Language doesn’t simply communicate information, but also builds relationship.

It’s important for us as Christians to share the truth of Jesus Christ with others. But to do that effectively, we need to learn the language of those with whom we want to share. When we learn how to communicate with others in the way that they can understand, we are telling them that they matter to us, and that our relationship with them matters. Once that happens, they are ready to listen to what we have to say to them.

Let’s be thankful for the work of St. Jerome and all those who have translated the Scriptures into the language of the people. This has made it possible for more people to hear and respond to God’s Good News of salvation. Let’s do our part by learning the "language" of the people we know, that we might share the love of Jesus Christ with them in the way they can understand and respond to.

Affectionately,

Fr. Andy+

WOMEN'S RETREAT

September 28-30, 2007

Bishop Quarterman Conference Center, Amarillo, Texas

The Reverend Susan Sims-Smith from the Diocese of Arkansas will join us to lead a weekend retreat for women. Her ministry is called Seedwork. SeedWork was created to enliven the faith of those within the church, to reach out to those who are unchurched, and to restore relationships with those who have felt hurt by the church. It is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Arkansas. Before becoming ordained as an Episcopal priest, The Rev. Sims-Smith worked for 25 years as a psychotherapist. She has taught extensively on dreams, committed relationships, and prayer and meditation.

This workshop examines how dreams communicate the needs of the soul as participants prayerfully seek God's guidance to live their lives. The rich spiritual discipline of understanding dreams and seeking to live in harmony with the messages they bring can enrich lives with comfort, challenge, and practical solutions to problems of daily life.

For more information about her work please go to: http://www.seedwork.org/index.html

HOUSE CHURCH LEADER RELEASED FROM PRISON

CHINA – On July 26, 2007, Beijing house church leader, Hua Huiqi was released from prison after serving six months.

According to China Aid Association (CAA), Hua Huiqi and his 76-year-old mother, Shuang Shuying, were arrested in January after being attacked by seven police officers. "While they were walking near a 2008 Olympic hotel site in Beijing, they were kicked to the ground and later taken to the Olympic police station for questioning. Hua’s mother was later sentenced to two years in prison. She is being held in a medical center because her health has deteriorated," CAA said.

Praise God for Hua Huiqi’s release. Please continue to pray for the release and healing of Shuang Shuying. Ask God to encourage Christians in China as they face escalating persecution ahead of the Olympics in 2008.
