~ When we do the best we can, we never know what miracle is wrought in our life, or in the life of another. - Helen Keller
Tradition Tradition: an inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action or behavior, (as religious practice or a social behavior). I just spent the best Sunday with five amazing and inquisitive little girls learning about Holy Communion. Mary Collier graciously offered her time to share her love of Jesus, the church and what it means to receive communion. Not only did the girls learn a great deal with this wonderful teacher, but also the adults learned some things that they had forgotten over the years. First Communion was such a big deal at my church when I was young. In my childhood church, All Saints' Episcopal Church in El Paso, it truly was the first time we were able to receive the bread and wine. Until then we were instructed by our parents to cross our hands at our chest and were blessed by the priest. I remember trying to trick the priest and hold out my hands to receive the bread and he still placed his hand on my head and gave me a blessing. With so many members how could he have known? God obviously whispered in his ear that I wasn't ready. We went through several classes before the "Big" day. We received communion the same day that the older kids were Confirmed. It truly was a "BIG" day. I am one of the many who have allowed their children to receive communion before they went through their First Communion classes. The church does allow baptized Christians to receive communion, but I know my reason was simply because I didn't like hearing them fuss because everyone else was receiving the bread and wine. With my children the wafer has been referred to as the "cookie", the "cracker" and the infamous "you know Mom, that thing we get". I have found that it has been much harder to go back and explain the importance of communion when it wasn't explained from the beginning. It is one of those "traditions" that I regret not passing on to my children. Fall is a reminder of the approaching holiday season. There is no other time during the year that is filled with so many traditions. Of all the traditions that were built from my childhood, those traditions held in the church are the ones closest to my heart. I hope you are able to continue those family traditions that bring you joy with your children and may they continue through many, many generations. Many Blessings, Karen Parnell, Director of Children's Ministries

Rays of Hope Children's Grief Centre 900 W. Wall St. Our goal at Rays of Hope is to provide a safe, neutral place for children to do the work of grief. Through facilitated peer support groups, we encourage children to use the creative arts as tools of expression. Placed with children of similar ages and circumstances, participants begin to realize they are not alone. With an adult facilitating the discussion, children share and acquire coping skills while working through the tough issues that accompany grief. Classes are 3-5 weeks long, beginning monthly and meet weekly. School age children 5-18 are welcome. There is no charge for enrollment. For more information, call 684-5437.
