GREETINGS from the GROWING and SERVING CORE TEAM!

By now you have hopefully all read the green letter explaining the re-focusing and revitalizing efforts within our Parish, building on our long standing tradition and seeing the bright future which is full of opportunities to fulfill our mission: "Sharing the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ with all people".

The GROWING and SERVING team is evaluating the current Council System and helping it become the well oiled machine that it is designed to be. The Council System is the backbone of our Parish, the "glue" which connects us togeth er as one body in Christ. It will be most effective when it is supported on all levels: (1) the Rector empowering and trusting the people of the Parish to carry out our mission in all of our functions as a church body, (2) effective, responsible, active, dedicated, committed, energized, positive leaders serving as Council Heads and Chairmen, and (3) lay people actively participating in several areas of our Parish in addition to their regular Sunday attendance. This last level takes inspiration and motivation. It requires us to take an entirely new outlook as to what "church" really is…not just a place to go, but rather a place where everyone is involved in serving others.

So, think about where (not if) you would like to get more involved with respect to your church…what do you like to do?…what is your passion? Reflect on this as you read the Many of us are very busy people…what are we busy with? Do you "tithe" your time to God? (24 hrs – 8 hrs (sleep) – 8 hrs (job) = 8 hrs per day x 7 days = 56 available hrs, 10% of which is 5.6 hours per week that you can give to God through serving others. Will you consider doing that? Stewardship is giving of yourself, your time and talents, as well as financial support.

Talk with any of us on the GROWING and SERVING team and find out more about what you can do and where you can serve in "Sharing the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ with all people". Thank you!

Love,

The GROWING and SERVING CORE TEAM : Anna Chester, Ann Curtis, Carol Evans, Jenness Gilles, Paula Howbert, Cindy Olive, Vangie Peek, Jane Williams.

Holy Homework

by Ann Onymous

I thought about giving you a break for the holidays in your homework assignment, but God doesn’t ever take a break, so….here we go!

REQUIRED READING: I Corinthians – Chapter 12 (very important)

MEMORY VERSE: I Corinthians 12: 24 – 27

But God has combined the members of the body and has given greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

FIND IT: We all know the Ten Commandments….don’t we? Name them, in order…oops?...missing a few? OK, then find them (clue - old testament)

EXTRA CREDIT: What is the reference to the commandments (New Testament) when they ask Jesus "which is the greatest commandment in the Law?"

HYMN OF THE WEEK: #433 We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing and #397 Now thank we all our God with hearts and hands and voices

PRAYER OF THE WEEK: (from BCP, Prayer of Thanksgivings, pg 840, #9)

Most gracious God, by whose knowledge the depths are broken up and the clouds drop down the dew: We yield thee hearty thanks and praise for the return of seedtime and harvest, for the increase of the ground and the gathering in of its fruits, and for all the other blessings of thy merciful providence bestowed upon this nation and people. And, we beseech thee, give us a just sense of these great mercies, such as may appear in our lives by a humble, holy, and obedient walking before thee all our days; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with thee and the Holy Ghost be all glory and honor, world without end. Amen.

Answers to Last Week's  Holy Homework  Assignment

What is it?: One in the spirit

The Beatitudes are found in Matthew 5: 3 – 12 and Luke 6: 20 - 26

FIND IT: There are four ways to understand the Beatitudes (1) a code of ethics for the disciples and a standard of conduct for all believers, (2) They contrast kingdom values (what is eternal) with worldly values (what is temporary), (3) They contrast the superficial "faith" of the Pharisees with the real faith Christ wants, (4) They show how the Old Testament expectations will be fulfilled in the new kingdom. The Beatitudes are not multiple choice – pick what you like and leave the rest! They must be taken as a whole. They describe what we should be like as Christ’s followers. (taken from NIV - Life Application Study Bible, page 1651)

HYMN QUESTIONS: # 8 Morning has broken (Cat Stevens), # 654 Day by Day (Godspell – different hymn tune) and # 265 The angel Gabriel (Sting)

Faces of Children Prayer Concerns

Mexico: Give thanks for Rebecca and her successful surgery. Praying for strength for future surgeries. For her family, that God would be with them and give them encouragement as they support Rebecca through this challenging situation.

Uganda: Praying for the disabled children receiving treatment at the CURE International Hospital and especially 14 year old Dennis and 13 year old Rachael.

India: Praying for the children served by the Good Shepherd Mission in Bihar State. That God would fulfill the needs of the orphaned children. For the volunteers and staff of GSM. Giving thanks for the pastor and leaders of this ministry who recognize the needs of these children.
