THE MORNING STAR And what about that morning star, sometimes capitalized: Morning Star. Isn’t it beautiful this time of year? This morning, for example, it looked bright enough to be an airplane on approach. Did you ever wonder how a small – or would we call Venus large? – planet, far away by the naked eye, could shine brilliantly? It does shine, too, like a planetary diamond. What makes that brilliance? The sun of course, rarely capitalized – Sun – but when you are as bright as the sun, what need to make more of it. Somewhere beyond the Earth’s horizon (let’s give ourselves a little "capital"), dark and not yet the morning, the sun shines on that planet, actually closer to it than Earth, and we have the marvel of the Morning Star. There are many ways to work with that image as a spiritual thought. Jesus is the Morning Star. That’s one. But what dawns on me – no pun intended, but since it’s there, what the heck! – when I see Venus during my morning walk with Mosie is that the Father is the source of light, which Jesus is bringing into the world. And though we cannot see the Father (no one has, remember, except the son) we can see every light of the Father in Jesus. And the ray of light that brings the Morning Star (Jesus) to my eye is none other than the Holy Spirit, constant and never failing. Of course, it will fail, this cosmic arrangement, at sometime in the future. That future won’t include you or me; I think I’m right in saying. It’s going to take awhile for this line up of stars and planets to be changed. Even that realization hints spiritually as the everlasting nature of Jesus, the Morning Star, and the Father full of light and the Holy Spirit, always bringing the light to our eyes. If we open our eyes, huh? Because closed eyes can’t see the beauty, not easily, anyway. And staying inside won’t do. We have to come out and at the very least, be beside someone who can tell us, if we cannot see but want to. That is Christian community. Yes, every time I look up in the cold mornings of the year I am happy to see the morning star of creation and more happy to see the Morning Star of the Father, even Jesus himself. Aren’t you happy, too, to be a part of those that see?
Happy Epiphany! Fr. Mark+
