Advent I Then shall they see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. LUKE 21: 27This is the great season of looking forward. We prepare for Christ's birth at Christmas. We proclaim His future ministry as did John the Baptist,. and we watch expectantly for His second coming. Advent is the beginning, the preparation for the Christian Year. In the Roman rite, Advent begins with our eyes firmly set on the Second Coming of Christ. The Gospel is the prophecy of the destruction of Jerusalem which was to occur in AD 70 when the city was razed to the ground by the Romans after the Jewish revolt. It continues with the picture of the signs and portents which will precede the arrival of Christ to judge the world. In the English Prayer Book this passage is pushed forward one week and for Advent I there is the story of Christ's triumphal entry into Jerusalem and his cleansing of the Temple on Palm Sunday. This is to emphasize the purification of the Church when He comes again. Both stories concentrate upon the judgment which is to come, the physical judgment of Jerusalem and the final judgment of the world. It is an essential part of the Christian gospel. As Dr. Johnson said "I cannot forget that my Saviour has said that He will separate the sheep from the goats". In this way the beginning of the Christian year establishes Christ as the central and eternal figure in the redemption of the world. We prepare, not just for the earthly life of Jesus, but for His continuing role as mediator between God and man. That day, when sent in glory by the Father, The Prince of Life His blest elect shall gather ; millions of angels round about Him flying, while all the kindreds of the earth are crying, and He, enthroned above the clouds, shall give His last just sentence, who must die, who live. Holy Homework by Ann Onymous I pray that you are ALL taking this "homework" seriously! It is NOT optional to grow in our FAITH by studying the word of God. We took on this course as we were baptized, confirmed and now as we chose to live our lives as Christians. FIND IT: Which angel appeared to Mary? To whom did he appear before Mary? REQUIRED READING: Luke - Chapter 1. EXTRA CREDIT: How many of the Gospels tell the story of the Nativity? MEMORY VERSE: Luke 1: 46 – 48 "My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior, for he has been mindful of the humble state of his servant." HYMN OF THE WEEK: # 65 Prepare the way, O Zion. (HINT – If you are unfamiliar with the hymns we have been studying, try "praying" the ‘Hymn of the Week’ next time you are in church, prior to the service. It can be quite a powerful prayer!) ADVANCED HYMN STUDENTS: What hymn is the beginning of our ADVENT HYMN section, and how many are there? PRAYER OF THE WEEK: (from BCP page 832, number 59) For Quiet Confidence. O God of peace, who has taught us that in returning and rest we shall be saved, in quietness and in confidence shall be our strength: By the might of thy Spirit lift us, we pray thee, to thy presence, where we may be still and know that thou art God; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen (this prayer was chosen in preparation for the advent season…remember to take time to be quiet and still!)

Answers to Last Week's Holy Homework Assignment
What is it? Start small…Think big!FIND IT: The Ten Commandments are in Exodus 20: 1 – 17: 1) no other gods before me, 2) no idols, 3) no misuse of name of the Lord your God, 4) keep Sabbath day holy, 5) honor ma & pa, 6) don’t murder, 7) don’t commit adultery, 8) don’t steal, 9) don’t bear false witness, 10) don’t covet EXTRA CREDIT: New Testament reference is found in Matthew 22: 34 – 40 (when the Pharisees were testing Jesus), ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments, kind of sums up all of them doesn’t it?!!! So for those of us with a shorter memory span,…commit the New Testament version to heart, soul and mind!
Advent Meditations Advent Meditation booklets for adults and children will be sent out the week after Thanksgiving. Be watching for them in the mail. Make sure you pick up your paper Advent Wreaths that accompany the children's Advent Booklet. They are available in the Narthex and the Parish Hall.
