Every year at this time, I approach my wedding anniversary. I guess we all remember our wedding days in our own ways, but I remember mine in two ways. Unknown to me at the time, a woman who was to become one of my lifelong friends and heroes was celebrating her own first anniversary in a distant city as I said, "I do"—her first anniversary with AA. I don’t know much about what led her to this decision. I only know that she had decided that she couldn’t go on. So, she put her affairs in order, made sure her animals would survive, and got ready to do the deed. Except, she heard the voice of God. I know a lot of people who’ve heard the voice of God and, oddly enough, He seems to sound different to each person. Sometimes, He speaks in a silent voice, one we know for absolute certainty IS the voice of the Creator without sound or words. One of my friends insists He sounds like Bing Crosby. Others report another sound entirely. However He sounds, when God speaks to us, we know. The place where we’re standing becomes holy ground, and, if we pay attention, our lives will never be the same. So, God spoke, my friend ceased her preparations and made two phone calls: one to AA and the other to Suicide Hotline. And she lived through the night and for 29 years beyond that. I’d like to say that her story has a Hollywood ending with a perfect family, economic prosperity, roses and romance, and they all lived happily ever after. But, then, this is a church so I am compelled to tell the truth. Her life has progressed as all of ours have, with days of unspeakable joy and nights of withering disappointment. She has spent seasons of her life an integral part of the church, an active AA member and sponsor and she has walked thought the desert alone. But in all her seasons, she carried one thing that keeps her going, even in the desert; she has met her Maker and His words have sustained her through the adversities and celebrations of her life. Her apartment in a distant city became holy ground for her and on that holy ground she was transformed. Bless you, my friend, for your story blesses us all. And happy anniversary. Terry Jolliffe
