HOPE!

Greetings from Vacation! I've traveled to my birthplace of Pennsylvania and I'm also making a whirlwind tour of the north east. I flew to Philadelphia and spent one night in Audubon, PA at my cousin's house before venturing on to New York City to meet our daughter Elizabeth. I have never been to NYC and have never seen so many lights, people, and taxi cabs in my life. Our first stop was Central Park - specifically The Tavern on the Green - a nice restaurant in the park. Next we went on to walk around under the trees, over the bridges, through Strawberry Fields and back to the amusement park to watch the children and families interact on a Friday afternoon. Prior to leaving the park, we heard a Youth choir from Tennessee sing "Ode to Joy" and I agreed with them that this truly was a place to give thanks and praise to God.

We saw the Broadway Play "The Color Purple" on Friday evening and by the end of the show, every person in the theatre was clapping, crying and giving thanks to God for the gift of hope! The music transformed a very sad story into a rainbow of hope in God. A question left for the audience to ponder was - where is your hope, if your hope is not with God? I thought this was an interesting concept being delivered from a Broadway play in Broadway Theatre in NYC to a vast audience.

Then on Saturday, I ventured to the Financial District to see Ground Zero. For me, to see St. Paul's Church without blemish across from the devastation, was another tribute to the omniscience of God. The steel cross beams which were found amidst the rubble after the devastation of 9/11, are mounted temporarily down the street until the Memorial is complete. On the cross bar of the steel beam there is torn metal which resembles a shroud. Again, I could see the presence of our Almighty God and I gave thanks for His Son dying on the cross for me and for you.

My point is that no matter where we are in our daily lives or on vacation, we can see God working through the people around us and give thanks everyday for His mercy and grace. I am thankful for all of our families and children who attended and helped with HolyWood VBS; for our Wednesday dinners and Bible Studies; the Holy Eucharists throughout the week; and for each and every one of you who make up the body of Christ at Holy Trinity Church in Midland, Texas.

By the next time I see you, I will have seen a niece in Berkley Springs, WV, walked on the Boardwalk in Atlantic City, walked through Valley Forge and visited family in Audubon, PA.—I will be glad to be back home.

Let us go forth into the world rejoicing in the power of the Holy Spirit!!

Your deacon, Mary

From Your Vestry —

Question: What does the vestry do on a month by month basis?

Answer: Each month the vestry tends to the business of the church by reviewing the financial statements and making sure the property is well cared for. A few of the current projects include evaluating our insurance policies to assure we have proper coverage at a good rate and researching a fire alarm system and security system. Children’s Day Out has a new playground surface. Our Mission & Outreach programs continue with a scholarship and new sound system for Easter College in the Philippines.

In an effort to further communication between the Vestry of Holy Trinity and the parishioners, we are soliciting your questions to be addressed in the weekly newsletter. Please email your questions to lucia.gray@gmail.com (Lucia Gray), juliahharvey@gmail.com (Julie Harvey), billg@compassoperating.com (Bill Granberry) or to any other vestry member.

What is the Significance of Being United to Christ in Holy Communion?

B. Communion with One Another

The reception of Holy Communion is an act of the Church as the Body of Christ. While we each personally receive Holy Communion, it is not a private devotion. Rather, the reception of Holy Communion is an integral part of our worship as a community of faith. Likewise, the term "communion" accentuates the fact that, in receiving Holy Communion, we are united to Jesus and thus to one another. As we become one body with Christ in receiving Holy Communion, we are also united with one another. "Because the loaf of bread is one, we, though many, are one body, for we all partake of the one loaf" (1 Corinthians 10:17).

Union with Christ is also union with all those to whom he gives himself. I cannot possess Christ just for myself; I can belong to him only in union with all those who have become, or who will become, his own.

Communion draws me out of myself towards him, and thus also towards unity with all Christians. We become "one body," completely joined in a single existence. Love of God and love of neighbor are now truly united: God incarnate draws us all to himself.

Receiving Jesus in Holy Communion is then the foremost source and expression of our communion with the Blessed Trinity and with one another. Holy Communion is truly a foretaste of heaven—where together all of the Father's children will become fully one with his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, in the love of the Spirit.

While the celebration of the Eucharist gives us a foretaste of that perfect unity for which we hope, this foretaste should itself inspire us to work for a deeper realization of communion among all men and women here on this earth. Since entering into the communion of the Eucharist brings us into closer conformity to Christ, we should be filled with a truly Christ-like love for our neighbor that takes us beyond a narrow concern for ourselves and moves us to promote the common good to uphold the human dignity of every human person.
