CONFIRMATION

Last Sunday we celebrated two wonderful events: Trinity Sunday and the Rite of Confirmation. The Bishop was here, the Nave was full, and we had a whole passel of fried chicken with which we filled our bellies after the service.

The Holy Trinity, as the Bishop told us, is a mystery. We can’t explain it very well but we know that this is how God manifests himself and has presented himself to us since the beginning. We believe that God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit is One being subsisting in three persons. We don’t know why, but that is how God does it. And in case you haven’t noticed He really isn’t in the business of telling us exactly why.

Confirmation, in my opinion, can be very mysterious as well. Why is it that someone decides to ask the Church to confirm them in their Christian faith? I have repeatedly said to these brave young souls in confirmation classes that they do not have to be confirmed; that they should consider, with great intention, what they are committing themselves to and that it should be done as their own response— not a response under the pressure from someone else. Yet there they were. Ready and willing to take on the Christian life with greater purpose and vigor.

So, from this past Sunday we have ample reason to celebrate. Like the Father in the Parable of the Prodigal Son, our God, our Triune God, is coming out to meet us on the hill once we realize what miserable failures we are. When we repeat our Baptismal Covenant in the Order of Service for Confirmation, we are reminding ourselves of our duty as sons and daughters of God. We reaffirm our belief in God as Trinity. We commit ourselves to the prayers, to the apostles' teaching (in case you forgot…that’s the Bible), and in the breaking of the bread. We state that we will resist the temptations of this world and that whenever we find ourselves giving in, we will turn away from those things and come home. We will evangelize the world, we will seek and serve Christ in all persons, and we will strive for justice and peace. Amen and Amen.

So how about it? Let us all pray in earnest for these young people: Will Blakemore, Russell Henderson, Emily Holeva, Ally Huseman, Molly McCabe, Landon Patterson, Morgan Poole, Emily Sirgo, Caroline Wheeler, and Lesa Wright. My prayer for you is that God will lead you into right paths, and that your journey will be one that leads to the only thing that is of any worth; life eternal with our Triune God. Amen and Amen.

From Your Vestry —

In an effort to further communication between the Vestry of Holy Trinity and the parishioners, we are soliciting your questions to be addressed in the Weekly Newsletter. Please email your questions to lucia.gray@gmail.com (Lucia Gray), juliaharvey@gmail.com (Julie Harvey), billg@compassoperating.com (Bill Granberry) or to any other vestry member.

Question: Why has Holy Trinity remained a part of The Episcopal Church (formerly ECUSA) when so many of our parishioners disagree with the direction The Episcopal Church (TEC) is taking?

Answer: The vestry has chosen to remain faithful to the Anglican Communion by waiting until the September 30 deadline posed by the Anglican Primates to TEC as specified in the Tanzania Communiqué. Depending on the outcome, Holy Trinity’s vestry will have to determine "what next?"

What do we believe about Holy Communion?

Holy Communion is a sharing in the Eucharist in which Christ is truly present. The priest, recalling the words and actions of Jesus at the Last Supper, consecrates the bread and wine, which are changed, by the power of the Holy Spirit, into the Body and Blood of Christ. This is why the Church has traditionally employed the word "transubstantiation" to describe the change that takes place. The substance of bread and wine remain, the Risen Lord Jesus is actually present, and so it is he who is actually received in Holy Communion—Body and Blood, soul and divinity.

We call our reception of Christ in the Eucharist "Holy Communion," for through our reception of his Body and Blood we come into Communion with him who is All-Holy. The Son of God came to share in our lowly humanity that we might come to share in his holy divinity. When we receive Christ in Holy Communion, we are united to the Risen Christ and come to share in his divine life. Thus, through Christ's indwelling, we are likewise united, in the Holy Spirit, to God the Father, the source of all holiness.

Hope, O my soul, hope. You know neither the day nor the hour. Watch carefully, for everything passes quickly, even though your impatience turns a very short time into a long one.
