Independence Day

Proper Psalms, Lessons, and Prayers were first appointed for this national observance in the Proposed Prayer Book of 1786. They were deleted, however, by the General Convention of 1789, primarily as a result of the intervention of Bishop William White. Though himself a supporter of the American Revolution, he felt that the required observance was inappropriate, since the majority of the Church’s clergy had, in fact, been loyal to the British crown.

Writing about the Convention which had called for the observance of the day throughout "this Church, on the fourth of July, for ever," White said, "The members of the convention seem to have thought themselves so established in their station of ecclesiastical legislators, that they might expect of the many clergy who had been averse to the American revolution the adoption of this service; although, by the use of it, they must make an implied acknowledgment of their error, in an address to Almighty God. . . . The greater stress is laid on this matter because of the notorious fact, that the majority of the clergy could not have used the service, without subjecting themselves to ridicule and censure. For the author’s part, having no hindrance of this sort, he contented himself with having opposed the measure, and kept the day from respect to the requisition of the convention; but could never hear of its being kept, in above two or three places beside Philadelphia."

It was not until the revision of 1928 that provision was again made for the liturgical observance of the day.

Lord God Almighty, in whose Name the founders of this country won liberty for themselves and for us, and lit the torch of freedom for nations then unborn: Grant, we beseech thee, that we and all the people of this land may have grace to maintain these liberties in righteousness and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

How Can We Prepare to Receive the Eucharist more worthily?

Attending church is not simply a private encounter between an individual and Jesus Christ. In a mystical manner, the whole Church is present in every celebration of Holy Eucharist, including the angels and saints of all ages. While the celebration of the Eucharist itself is a communal act, the benefit that each individual receives from the Eucharistic celebration depends on the way he or she approaches the sacrament. We would like to point out various ways in which each individual can better prepare himself or herself to more deeply enter the Eucharistic celebration, in order to receive the Body and Blood of Christ more worthily.

There are two interrelated ways in which we foster the worthy reception of Holy Eucharist. One is through "remote preparation." The first has to do with how we live our Christian lives every day. The second has to do with how we come to participate in the Eucharistic liturgy itself.

Regular prayer and Scripture reading: both allow the Holy Spirit to work within us and so engender a love of Jesus and a desire to do the will of the Father in our lives. Especially recommended is Morning and Evening prayer.

Faithful and loving fulfillment of the duties and responsibilities of our state in life: These responsibilities will differ insofar as one is a single person, a spouse, or a parent; a child, adolescent, or young adult; a grandparent; a bishop, priest, deacon, or one in consecrated life; a worker or retired person; one who is healthy or one who is infirm. It is by faithfully living out in our daily lives the call of the Gospel to love God and our neighbor—especially the poor and the vulnerable—that we grow in charity, and so draw closer to Jesus and to one another.

Daily repentance of sin: Sin undermines and weakens our communion not only with the Holy Trinity but also with one another. Therefore, in order to overcome the damage caused by sin, we are called to daily repentance. Briefly examining our conscience, such as before retiring at night, helps guide our repentance and fosters holiness of life. Through this means, not only are the destructive forces of sin vanquished in our lives, but love is once more inflamed for God and for others. Communion is healed and strengthened. Frequent reception of the Eucharist strengthens us against temptation and sin and helps us cultivate a life of virtue.

Next week, "Participation in the Eucharistic Liturgy".

UZBEKISTAN Imprisoned Pastor Transferred to Harsher Camp – Forum 18 News/ VOM Sources
Imprisoned Pentecostal pastor, Dmitry Shestakov, has been transferred to a harsher labor camp in Navoi, Uzbekistan. The new camp is a longer distance from his wife and three children. In May 2007, Shestakov was sentenced to four years in an open work camp, in Andijan, for "religious activity." Christians in Uzbekistan told Forum 18 News, "The authorities claim he misbehaved in the open work camp and that’s why they ordered his transfer to a harsher camp. We believe this was deliberately set up." Forum 18 News reports that Pastor Shestakov’s transfer comes as authorities prepare administrative trials against members of his congregation in his home town of Andijan in the Fergana Valley in eastern Uzbekistan. Pray for Pastor Shestakov and his family. Ask God to watch over them during this difficult time. Psalm 32:7, Psalm 91:14-16

CHINA House-Church Leader Assaulted by Police – China Aid Association
On May 15, 2007, Liu Fenngang, a house-church leader in Beijing, was assaulted and detained by police, while he was going to a birthday celebration. According to China Aid Association (CAA), Liu’s family was threatened and told not to draw public attention to his unlawful arrest. Liu told CAA, "It was at 7:15 a.m., and I was stopped by a plain clothed police man while walking down stairs. After a bit of shoving, I managed to work my way to the bottom of the stairs. Then, more policemen confronted me, saying they had no good reason or legal basis to arrest me, but they simply couldn’t allow me to leave the building." CAA adds that some police officers told Liu they knew arresting him was illegal, but said if they let him go, they would lose their jobs. Pray Liu Fenngang and his family remain strong in their faith. Pray his health will not be affected by the assault. Isaiah 38:16, Acts 4:29-30
