GOD'S BLESSINGS FOR 2008

The New Year makes us think in all kinds of ways but maybe two are the most prevalent: we think to look back and, yes, we think to look forward. Our looking back is often filled with regret. At the very least we ponder those things that didn’t go well or we hope not to experience again. When we look forward, attached is our looking back because we "resolve" to make a new start and not repeat the past. If the old year was simply not as much as we hoped for, our resolutions are maybe more gentle in nature. If we have lived in a way or been forced to experience life in ways we did not want, our resolutions are, perhaps, more full bodied. In any case, most of us, openly or secretly, make our claim for new resolve in the New Year.

Though we don’t hear it often because Rite II in the Book of Common Prayer does not include it in the Eucharistic Rite, the "comfortable words" that we remember from the 1928 BCP and still remain in Rite I of the ’79 BCP are a great comfort and aid in our New Year resolves. "Come unto me, all ye that travail and are heavy laden, and I will refresh you." (Matthew 11:28) I cannot tell you the number of times that one gift of words from the Word himself, Jesus, has given me just that: refreshment. Into a new year, when looking back can be painful, knowing that this invitation from the Son of God, whose birth we celebrated recently and whose Epiphany to the three Kings we celebrate next, is available to me every day, then I have the only resolution I need for my new year.

Come to Jesus and receive the refreshment that makes it possible to go on, renewed and hopeful, even when things happen, by choice or not. And things do happen.

One of the prayers of the season says this: "As your Son, in putting on our flesh, chose to become our partner in weakness, so may we, through the water of rebirth and renewed by the Holy Spirit, become partners with your Son in the new life announced this day, the Gospel we ponder in our hearts." I hope you will hold on to this very core message in God’s word and in prayer. We have everything going for us because he who came to meet us knows! And holding his hand is to hold the hand of refreshment.

God’s blessings and refreshment in 2008!

Fr. Mark+
