If you read this Sunday’s passage in the Forward Day by Day booklet, you’ll find Isaiah 62:1-5 But you shall be called My Delight Is in Her, and your land Married. This initially made little sense to me. In fact, even after reading thru the meditation and looking further, I was still at a loss, especially given the prayer for this Sunday: PRAY for Christian unity; for the healing of all schism in the one, holy, catholic, and apostolic church. While the prayer, one which I’ve said countless times this year, appeared quite relevant to these times, though seemingly out of place for Epiphany, I was still unable to tie it to the commentary.

Onward to the Gospel reading when Jesus turns water to wine in John 2:1-11. And to the 1 Corinthians 12:1-11 reading where Paul speaks of spiritual gifts, particularly of our different gifts, but all to the glory of the same God. Still more to put my arms around, let alone relate this all back to an Old Testament passage with names I can’t pronounce, and even more so to the second Sunday of Epiphany.

Epiphany is the celebration, the "shining forth", or revelation of God to mankind in human form, Jesus. He is among us with the purpose to draw His followers, with all our differences, to the one God, to that place where we were created to be. It is in Him that we are transformed in the same way the nation of Judah, after wandering and enduring challenges from hostile nations and from within, by adhering to the faith, is transformed to Hephzibah in the land of Beulah. He rejoices in our arrival, as we rejoice in the new creation of marriage.

Isaiah reminds us we have cause to celebrate, a message of hope and glory, that despite our challenges and tribulations, that thru faith in and following God, we can live in paradise.

Just Ask Me…

Dear Miss Know It All,
I am so relieved that I will not be called on to be a minister! I would not like to be referred to as Fr. Dumb Founded!
Dumb Founded

Dear Dumb Founded,
It is interesting that you bring that up: the term "Father". It is an honorific title, borrowed from the Roman Catholic practice, and it spread widely in the Anglo-catholic movement of the Episcopal church in the nineteenth century. By the late twentieth century, the title was used widely by most Episcopalians. The Book of Common Prayer does not require the use of any title by priests. Its counterpart, "Mother", is sometimes used by female priests.

We'll build relationships, be a part of each other's journey and we'll record our stories along the way.
