Ash Wednesday When this day was made the first day of Lent, the name first given to it in the Roman service books was 'CaputJejunii' - 'the Head of the Fast'. Later it was called 'Dies Cinerum' - the 'Day of Ashes' - and so assumed its present name. From about the seventh century those who had committed serious sins and were prepared to submit to public penance, presented themselves at the beginning of Lent to the Bishop in his church, clothed in sackcloth and with bare feet, where they joined with him and the rest of the clergy in repeating the seven penitential psalms. Then they were sent into a monastery for their penitential exercises and remained there until shortly before Easter. This practice was gradually replaced by the whole Church putting itself to penance during Lent, and this was symbolized by the ceremonial use of ashes with a solemn penitential service in the churches. To strew ashes upon the head was in Old Testament times a sign of grief and mourning. It was an early custom for penitents under excommunication to sprinkle ashes upon their heads and stand a the door of the church to beseech the prayers of those who were entering, that they might be absolved and re-admitted to Communion. In the rite for Ash Wednesday, ashes, made by burning the palm leaves which had been blessed on the Palm Sunday of the year before, are placed upon the altar, blessed, sprinkled with holy water and censed. The congregation then kneel at the altar rails and the priest touches their forehead with a portion of the ash, saying, "Remember, O man, thou art dust, and unto dust thou shalt return." Youth programs that are "too spiritual" for recreation probably will not achieve those spiritual goals. Recreation is an essential part of youth ministry for several reasons: · Life-changing youth ministry primarily takes place in the context of relationships. Most young people's lives are changed by gospel truth as that truth is interpreted in relationships. Games and recreation build relationships · Youth in churches that only permit very serious study sessions seldom discover trusting friendships that can lead to discipling. Recreation and games build trust. · Recreation can provide a way for teenagers to express hidden abilities, leading to an observable change in feelings of self-worth. · Quality recreation also can help troubled youth cope with stress. Contemporary teenagers are pressured to grow up quickly. Stress is a daily part of most teenager’s lives. Laughing and enjoying a game of volleyball can significantly reduce the stress which these teenagers carried when they arrived at your youth meeting. Taken from creativeyouthideas.com
KIDS SCOOP Lent Mission Friends Adventure All children’s programs will take a break from the regular programs to learn about missionaries and their work in other countries. This four week class will take us to Kenya, India, Dominican Republic and Thailand. We will learn what the people of these countries eat, do for fun, their religion and how missionaries work in their countries. This will be fun and we want all children to join us in Lent for our adventure!

Great Dates March 3 Great Dates is an award-winning marriage education program that helps couples recharge the fun and conversation in their relationship. Great Dates is an opportunity for couples to have time-out to build their marriage and to enrich their relationship. It’s a unique program that combines fun dates and marriage education skills. The concept is simple. First, couples meet together as a group. Each session begins with a short video date launch, where the theme for that particular date is introduced. Then couples experience their own "great date" by actually going out on a date with their partner! During these purposeful dates, couples learn to communicate better, process anger and resolve conflicts, appreciate differences, encourage each other, develop spiritual intimacy, and balance busy lifestyles. Great Dates is appropriate for ALL ages and stages of marriage. Come and join in the fun!
Just Ask Me… Dear gentle readers (including Dumb Founded), I have run out of topics to write about. (Who would have thought). Please submit questions to Cindy at the Church Office. Also, a very important meeting is happening on March 4. Please attend and vote whichever way your conscience dictates. Miss Know It All
Blessing of the Shawls On Sunday, February 25, the creations of the Shawl Ministry will be blessed during our Sunday services. Please turn in all completed projects to Mary Hunter prior to that date. If you are unable to join us on that date, you can still be a member of the ministry and contribute your creative efforts to the group. We also welcome all levels of experience in the yarn arts, from beginners to veterans. Don't know how to knit or crochet?...Come join us and we'll teach you! Can't make it to our regular scheduled gatherings?...Call Mary Hunter to arrange for "private lessons"! We have yarn and patterns available for you. Mission & Outreach Corner Thanks to Robbie Shepard for agreeing to be the captain of this year’s home. Robbie, a roofing contractor, has encouraged us to re-roof the house. Much to the anticipated chagrin of my aching knees, this, and other repairs on a deserving house, will be tried. So, if you can paint, rake, lift, make sandwiches, or contribute in any way, please look for the sign up poster in the church. The work is in April, the date to be determined. Remember, the house will be chosen on Thursday, February 22. This trial effort to provide sandwiches to the Salvation Army seems to be going smoothly, with the second installment on January 27. I have been encouraged to be a bit more organized about the dates and have decided that the 3rd Saturday of the month @ 10:00 AM will be a good time. This allows plenty of time for prep work, sandwich making, and delivery. With a crew of 6 folks and an assembly line, we made 40+ sandwiches in less than 30 minutes. The next several 3rd Saturday’s are:March 17, April 21, May 19. Several folks have volunteered to be on a work team, but no takers yet for help. Please consider this opportunity for some basic assistance around the home. Call the church office and leave your name and need. I hope to get this effort going to help fellow parishioners.
Meetings are held the 3rd Monday of the month in the parish hall at 5:30. The next meeting is February 19. It will entail discussion of plans for this year. Come if you wish to be on the council and wish to offer suggestions for more effective outreach. Patrick Collier, 695-0811

If you have any questions, just call Doris Cannaday at 685-7002!
Thank You! The Boy Scouts of Troop 51 want to thank everyone who helped make our fundraiser successful. We sold over 100 jars of hot sauce and made close to a $1000. A special thanks to Jim Newman and Mary Collier who bought a whole case each! This money will be well spent as our Troop continues to grow each year. Without the support of the family from the Episcopal Church of the Holy Trinity our Troop would not be where it is today. Again, thanks to everyone and God Bless.
