Lenten Lessons Learned How is your quiet time/sabbatical going? Are you hearing God? Are you feeling refreshed and renewed? I wanted to share a little of what I’ve heard this week! I was hoping this Lenten season that I had graduated on to a new Lenten discipline, but alas it seems I’m stuck on the same one again… I have been for several years. In reading the lessons for Ash Wednesday, the same Lenten discipline jumped out to me again. It wasn’t even in the regular reading but the Occasional readings lesson in Isaiah 58:1-12, which I was encouraged to read, specifically verses 9-10. If you do away with the yoke of oppression, with the pointing finger and malicious talk, and if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness and your night will become like the noonday. The Lord will guide you always; he will satisfy your needs in a sun-scorched land and will strengthen your frame. You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail. Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins, and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called the Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Street with Dwellings. I wanted to share my Lenten Discipline, because I think it is something we at Holy Trinity struggle with. I have always heard the saying "If you can’t say something nice about someone, don’t say anything at all." My first confrontation with this discipline came from Ephesians 4:29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. Other scriptures have concluded this truth. James 5:9 Don’t grumble against each other, brothers, or you will be judged. I Corinthians 10: 10 And do not grumble, as some of them did and were killed by the destroying angel and the red letter words of Jesus in John 6:43 Stop grumbling among yourselves. How does that affect us if we do grumble and don’t build others up? From the Ash Wednesday's lesson in 2 Corinthians 5:20-6:10, we hear that We are Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. What does backbiting and grumbling do to our reputation as Ambassadors for Christ? As 2 Corinthians 6:3 says, We put no stumbling block in anyone’s paths, so that our ministry will not be discredited. Even as we at Holy Trinity face some of the same hardships that Paul is facing in the next few verses, we too should be able to stand in the midst of our trials and hardships "in purity, understanding, patience and kindness, in the Holy Spirit and in sincere love." Can we do as David did in Psalm 101:5 Whoever slanders his neighbor in secret, him will I put to silence. And if we don’t, Psalm 103 reminds us He forgives. But we may suffer the natural consequences of tarnishing our ambassadorship, and our light at Holy Trinity will be dimmed! Yours in Christ Paula Howbert
