Let’s Play

I had a vision a few months back to provide a Sunday school program that would be fun yet educational for our children. It would be such a fabulous program that the children would be excited to come to church and see what was in store for them on Sunday. It would be full of curiosity and wonderment, fun and laughter, but also structure while instilling manners. Sounds impossible, huh?

Through Mary Collier’s parallel vision, Godly Play has come to Holy Trinity. What a fabulous program indeed! It has everything one could hope for and more. The children are excited about Sunday school and curious about Jesus (Yeah God!). They love the stories living in our boxes not to mention all the fun recreating them in our Dramatic Play room and through arts and crafts. We had numerous costumes that were only used for Christmas that have been dusted off for continuous use. There are felt sceneries for our stage backdrops, hats, canes, puppets, chalk, blocks and even a wonderful wardrobe that Mary donated full of the most spectacular costumes – We have fish heads!!

The other requirement I had for this program was to involve every member of our congregation, from teenagers to grandparents. This would give all of us an opportunity to uphold our commitment we made when these children were baptized to "do all in our power to support these persons in their life of Christ". Godly Play has just that. Through storytellers and facilitators, every member has an opportunity to know our youth, to share the love of Jesus Christ with our youth, and to allow the children to know you.

Please join us for our next training this coming Wednesday, February 13, from 6-7pm. We will meet in the Parish Hall. Everyone is welcome! Even if you are unsure about how you can help but are just curious – come. If you have already attended training and want a refresher – come. If you are usually bored on Wednesdays and just want something to do – come. And…if you are hungry, come early (5:30) for supper.

Sharing the Laughter and Love,

Karen Parnell

Christian Education Director

My Mountain Top Experience

I wanted to share my retreat experience with my family parishioners, and encourage you this Lenten season to find your mountaintop. I recently returned from Laity Lodge with a much-needed retreat. I confess I only attended one workshop. The great thing about Laity Lodge is they give you permission to do whatever you need in order to experience God, even if it means not attending anything. I let go of the guilt of skipping and hiked, created in the art studio, and fellowshipped around the fire with my church family. It was just what I needed to hear God.

Last Sunday’s lessons share similar mountain top experiences of Moses and Jesus and his disciples. It was a place to get away from the business, and hear God. Of course Peter was ready to jump in and build booths, instead of sit, listen, and worship. So what did God say to me? Why not take this retreat experience or sabbatical rest back to Holy Trinity. What if we at Holy Trinity had permission to do what we needed to find and listen to God? Could we give ourselves a sabbatical rest for a period of time?

Having served on the Growing and Sharing team, we have been caught up in the doing. We have been trying to keep Holy Trinity going in the midst of a decline in members. How much of our doing is really what we need? How do we fill all the missing spaces in our ministries? Where is God directing us? A quote from the book Learning to Listen says, "Much of our world's noise and activity seem designed to silence the hungers and longings of our heart." Our team felt too the need to rest for awhile, in order to hear God’s direction.

So what does that look like for you? Where is God calling you to rest and hear his voice? It may be worship, prayer, Bible Study, walking in nature, serving others, or creating at Nancy’s Place. If you don’t see a place where your need can be met, maybe you can provide that for yourself and for others seeking the same thing. Check out the sign ups in the hall off the Parish Hall for opportunities to serve or grow at Holy Trinity. Give yourself permission this Lenten season to Be instead of to Do. The point of mountain top experiences is not to stay there, but to take that with you into the world. It’s a time of preparation, empowerment and direction. Just what we all need!

Yours in Christ,

Paula Howbert
