Bumps in the Night

In my roles of both mother, and children’s ministry director, I have seen the many fears that children face. Shadows in the night, a giant mouse mascot at a pizza place, and loud sounds that startle, are some of the things that make the world seem big, scary and loud. As a mother, I have said, "See, its not scary. It's just a man dressed up in a suit." or "Those sounds are just the beautiful fireworks in the sky". It seems easy to ease and console the fears of children, but what about the fears and concerns of grown-ups?

Life is scary sometimes, if not a lot of times, and it is hard to ease and console our own fears. We are blessed to have the Father to take on our fears for us and to be that comfort in a world that is always changing. Many times in the Psalms, the various writers felt lonely, scared, and betrayed, and they turned to the Lord for their strength. Psalm 4 starts with "Answer me when I call, Oh God, defender of my cause, you have set me free when I am hard-pressed; have mercy on me and hear my prayer.", and ends with "I lie down in peace; at once I fall asleep; for only you, Lord, make me dwell in safety." The writer finds that peace and is able to rest without fear because he called upon the Lord for comfort.

As with children, nighttime can be scary for adults also. The night brings the stresses of the day that has past and the worries of tomorrow and can keep us up, and watching infomercials instead of getting our needed rest. I, as well as many of you, have found comfort in the Compline service in the Book of Common Prayer. This service helps me call upon the Lord at the close of the day and give my prayers, concerns and thanksgivings to Him. I encourage everyone to take another look at this service if you haven’t in awhile. I will leave you with my favorite prayer from Compline and wish for you the grace, comfort, and peace that only comes from our Lord.

Blessings,

Dedee Boring

Director of Children’s Ministries

Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this life may rest in your eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen

Scripture in God's Plan of Salvation

On the very day of Pentecost, when the Church appeared before the world, "those who received the word" of Peter "were baptized." And "they continued steadfastly in the teaching of the apostles and in the communion of the breaking of bread and in prayers . . . praising God and being in favor with all the people" (Acts 2:41-47).

From that time onwards the Church has never failed to come together to celebrate the paschal mystery: reading those things "which were in all the scriptures concerning him" (Luke 24:27), celebrating the Eucharist in which "the victory and triumph of his death are again made present" (Council of Trent), and at the same time giving thanks "to God for his unspeakable gift" (2 Cor. 9:15) in Christ Jesus, "in praise of his glory" (Ephesians 1:12), through the power of the Holy Spirit.

To accomplish so great a work, Christ is always present in his Church, especially in her liturgical celebrations. By his power he is present in the sacraments, so that when a priest baptizes it is really Christ himself who baptizes. He is present in his Word, since it is he himself who speaks when the holy scriptures are read in the Church.

The Church has always venerated the divine Scriptures just as she venerates the body of the Lord, since, especially in the sacred liturgy, she unceasingly receives and offers to the faithful the bread of life from the table both of God's word and of Christ's body.

In the sacred books, the Father who is in heaven meets his children with great love and speaks with them; and the force and power in the word of God is so great that it stands as the support and energy of the Church, the strength of faith for her sons, the food of the soul, the pure and everlasting source of spiritual life. Consequently these words are perfectly applicable to Sacred Scripture: "For the word of God is living and active" (Hebrews 4:12) and "it has power to build you up and give you your heritage among all those who are sanctified" (Acts 20:32; 1 Th. 2:13).

ECW WOMEN'S RETREAT

September 28-30, 2007

Bishop Quarterman Conference Center, Amarillo, Texas

The Reverend Susan Sims-Smith from the Diocese of Arkansas will join us to lead a weekend retreat for women. Her ministry is called Seedwork. SeedWork was created to enliven the faith of those within the church, to reach out to those who are unchurched, and to restore relationships with those who have felt hurt by the church. It is a ministry of the Episcopal Diocese of Arkansas. Before becoming ordained as an Episcopal priest, The Rev. Sims-Smith worked for 25 years as a psychotherapist. She has taught extensively on dreams, committed relationships, and prayer and meditation.

This workshop examines how dreams communicate the needs of the soul as participants prayerfully seek God's guidance to live their lives. The rich spiritual discipline of understanding dreams and seeking to live in harmony with the messages they bring can enrich lives with comfort, challenge, and practical solutions to problems of daily life.

For more information about her work please go to: http://www.seedwork.org/index.html
