Episcopal CHurch of the Holy Trinity, Midland TX

Let this be a story, abounding with the details that have gone into our growth, the humble labors and personal generosity that have become a tradition here. Because this is a proud moment in our history, we could gloss over the steps in our background, but it is such a good time to count our blessings ONE by ONE. It is an inspiration to the present to know the struggle of the past, to understand that ftve or ten people can build a church!

from a handwritten History of Holy Trinity, dated 1948

First  Episcopal Services in Midland.

October 5, 1884 – Led by the Right Reverend Robert W.B. Elliott, Bishop of the Missionary Jurisdiction of Western Texas.

1910 – An Episcopal mission church had been founded.

June 1929 – A new mission “Trinity Chapel” was founded.

Worshiping originally in a small frame building in downtown Midland, that first church building was moved to the present location in 1935.

1929 – Women’s Auxiliary was founded.

1934 – Holy Trinity Women founded the “Church School” or Christian Education Department.

1939 – Men’s Club was founded.

1939 – western end of the present church building was constructed.

1940-1950 – Saw major growth.

1941 – Rose Window was added.

1943 – Full parish status.

Holy Trinity was formally admitted to the Missionary District of Northern Texas as the sixth self- supporting parish church.

1956 – Parish Hall and Sunday School buildings were built.

1958 – A Parish School was founded by parishioners on the premises.

1962 – Trinity School moved to its current Wadley Avenue campus.

1966 – Trinity School of Midland obtained a state charter and began operations with its own Board of Trustees.

Holy Trinity Church continued to grow impressively in the 1960s and 1970s.

1968 – A new wing was added.

1974 – interior of the church was enlarged.

1976 – bell tower was added by Frank Welch in memory of his son Baker.

Like some West Texas roads, all true history includes bumps and difficult stretches. And so it is with Holy Trinity.

1966 – Diocese of Northwest Texas held a trial of our Rector over misuse of church funds, and some 10 years later experienced sharp conflict and discord over another Rector.

1978 – Reverend Sam Hulsey became Rector, and two years later the Diocese elected him Bishop of Northwest Texas.

1983 – Holy Trinity called the Reverend Dr. Allen Whitman as 7th Rector. Father Whitman was most successful, and his 12 years as Rector ushered in a kind of golden age of Holy Trinity Church. It was a period of unparalleled growth in many different ways and the parish became the largest in the diocese.

1990 – parishioners built another education building, St. Francis Hall.

1992 – Upon the retirement of Father Whitman; the Reverend Stockton Williams was called as 8th Rector.

2003 – Reverend Dr. Mark L. Cannaday was called to serve as 9th Rector.

Upheaval in the Episcopal Church created over issues of sexuality divided Episcopalians nationwide. Many left the parish and the denomination.

2008 – Deeply disappointed by the weakening strength of Holy Trinity, Father Cannaday retired.

2010 – In the 100th Anniversary year of the parish, the Reverend John Wedgwood- Greenhow was called to serve as Holy Trinity’s 10th Rector

2013 – Rev. Barbara Kirk-Norris was called to serve as Associate Rector in April.

2013 – Father John Wedgwood-Greenhow resigned for personal reasons in September.

Our Congregation and lay leadership are strong, the future bright, and the opportunities great. Our Mission remains the same: “In all that we do, we hope to share the knowledge and love of Jesus Christ with all people.” We know that by God’s grace Holy Trinity Church will flourish and its history continue.
